The tee shirt in the picture above has quickly become a favorite in the Athlete Style rotation. Of course it fits perfectly and has a fun design but it also sends an even bigger message. That's what Nike does so well with the Livestrong collection. Cute clothes that have purpose. In this case it was to raise awareness and support for getting cancer on the UN global agenda. The shirts were available for one week only at NY Niketown, however, they seem to be very in demand - so maybe they will be added to the holiday line. Stay tuned for updates and in the meantime FIGHT LIKE HELL!
My race yesterday at USA Nationals in Buffalo, NY was going well until a crash on the 7th of 8 laps of the bike course. After recovering from a very slow swim, I was actually riding well, helping my group chase down all of the packs in front of us, and trying to maintain a fast pace. Most of the time I was rotating with a few others at the front of the pack, but with 2 laps to go, I kind of drifted toward the back to assess who else was still with us, to see what I was dealing with for the run. Just at that moment, 2 girls in front of me got tangled up and went down, I did my best to avoid the situation, drifting to the right where I saw open road. Unfortunately, someone came up on my right and I was knocked off my bike into the gravel shoulder. My coach, Cliff, was right there and told me to get up and keep riding. It took me a second to figure out what was going on, but I got up, did a few minor bike repairs and started riding. I was having a hard time holding on to the bars and looked down and saw that my hands were all bloody. Then I thought, ok, just use the aero bars. Tried that and realized that I had a cut on my elbow and blood running down my arm. I managed to finish the last 2 laps of the bike (with a rubbing brake) and thought I may as well try running, even though I had lost so much time. Once I got on the run course, I realized that my hip was really sore and looked down and noticed that I fell on my hip too. I tried to keep running, but things just didn't feel right and then everything started to hurt.
Thanks to everyone who came out for the Livestrong Fight Like Hell run last night. For those of you who wanted to come but weren't able to get to Midtown, this will give you an idea of what it was like.
At around 6 pm, a large crowd of runners gathered at the Niketown store on 57th street. The runners, mostly from New York Road Runners Clubs, signed in and received a special Fight Like Hell t-shirt (like the one Dhani Jones is wearing above) to wear during the run. Meanwhile, Laurel and Bec were upstairs in a Nike office, changing into the latest Livestrong gear and prepping for the event. When Lance arrived, at around 7pm, everyone gathered around the store lobby to listen to his welcome speech and pep talk. Then, within seconds, Lance dashed out to the streets, followed by the large crowd of runners, some carrying large Fight Like Hell flags. From the first step the pace was FAST. Luckily for Laurel & Bec, who had just driven from Syracuse after racing the half ironman, there was a stop at Columbus Circle to regroup and pick up another large group of runners & twitter followers.
Last Saturday one of our friends, Lauren Beam, lost her fight with colon cancer. We met Lauren through Chelsea Piers, where she worked and also worked out. We were also neighbors in the West Village. Lauren was a standout athlete, I think I remember her telling me she was a state champion in swimming AND cross country. She swam and won many titles as a breaststroker at NYU. For the last several years she has been the head coach of the NYU Women's swim team and they have had incredible success under her leadership. For good reason, she was named coach of the year the last few years by her conference. Lauren was also a triathlete and competed and did well in many races. I remember seeing results and thinking, she is fast. She could be a pro! On top of athletics, Lauren was an exceptional friend. One of those people who genuinely listens and laughs and makes you feel good. When she was diagnosed two years ago, everyone was shocked but knew she'd FIGHT LIKE HELL.
