Yesterday was our friend Lino's 40th birthday so I decided to switch up our planned swim workout and do a 40-themed set instead.  The set looked harder than it turned out and it flew by.
We’re two sisters, both professional triathletes, and a food-writer friend who have joined forces to start a blog about how athletes really eat. Laurel snaps a fantastic photo. Melissa is a seasoned food and outdoors writer. And Bec cooks a fierce healthy meal.  Laurel and Melissa met on a plane to Italy years ago and then ended up working at the same magazine in NYC.  The three of us have been trading food ideas ever since.

50 degrees and 50 miles - good way to start the year!  Check out the photo above - some people were even wearing shorts.  I was perfectly warm with my Nike Pro Combat baselayer underneath my Livestrong kit.  We rode just past Nyack with a quick stop for a muffin & coffee.  On the way home, I couldn't resist snapping this photo of the Hudson.

pre-workout energyIt's that time of year again:  The annual New Year's Swim set. Typically, New Year's swims are a minimum of 10k and are the last big swim set of the year.

Today, our small swim squad, "occupied" lane 2 of the Bard College Aquatic Center for the better part of the afternoon.  We only had one small sign (a whiteboard with our set written on it), but had plenty of food and drink (EFS drinks & gels).  We set out to do a 10k set, but I got the bright idea to tack on an extra 1000 at around the 6.5k mark.  At 8.5k I had second thoughts, but there was no turning back.

This is the set we did, written by Dave Barra:

Winter is here.  My weather app is telling me it feels like 12 degrees outside right now.  No wonder yesterday after I came back from riding outside I had to spend 10 minutes in a painful daze as the warmth tried to return to my fingers.  Made me temporarily wonder whether riding outside was worth it.  Of course it was.
