All in Race Reports

Yesterday, the day Amy turned five months, I returned to the world of professional triathlon after an 18 month break. I couldn't have asked for a more welcoming environment to jump back into racing than the Philly Triathlon. Everyone one was so supportive and even though I didn't win the race, the fans made me feel like I was their champion.
I normally wouldn’t be happy with running a 5k over three minutes slower than my best time, but crossing the line in 19 minutes, 55 seconds at yesterday’s New Paltz Challenge called for a celebration.
Going into the race, I had what I thought was the realistic expectation to break 21 minutes. At this stage in my run training, all signs pointed to a 20-plus minute 5k.

With the exception of a few people, everyone I know thinks I’m crazy for swimming in the Hudson River. I really just can’t figure out why. What’s not to like about jumping into a cold, choppy river with a tide table that takes a PhD to figure out?
Yesterday was my first race of the 2013 season and I am very happy to report I placed 5th at the Columbia Triathlon. Yes, fifth place would usually leave me very unsatisfied, especially at a race where I have been 3rd-1st-3rd-3rd, but this time it was a big win!
I didn't think I'd be writing a race report 3.5 months after Amy was born, but yesterday I completed my first race in over a year. It wasn't a professional race, and it wasn't a particularly competitive race, but I'm ranking it as one of my top five performances ever.
I am hesitant to call this a Race Report...when I can't really say I raced - or finished. So, let's just call it a race "experience". It was certainly a good experience!
Road Trip: NYC to LA.For the past 2 months I have been living and training in Santa Monica, California. After spending a few weeks training in Tucson with my coach Cliff English, I came out here in early March to escape the New York winter and spend some quality time in the pool and in the mountains.
